    Information / Baghdad...
The representative of Basra Governorate, Ahmed Al-Rubaie, held the central government responsible for the continued rise in food prices due to its closure of the southern border crossings to the entry of foodstuffs, pointing out that the government no longer had a justification to keep the southern outlets closed, unlike what it does with the northern outlets.
Al-Rubaie told Al-Maalouma, "The Cabinet's decision regarding opening border crossings and customs exemption has been applied in northern Iraq in the Kurdistan region, but it has not been applied in the southern governorates and Shalamcheh port in particular."
He added, "Kurdistan has 4 ports and 21 crossings, all of which are unofficial, according to what was confirmed by the Border Ports Authority, while they were opened to the entry of foodstuffs, and the southern outlets were kept closed."
And he indicated that "foodstuff is exported from the Iranian regions bordering southern Iraq, and the first is to enter through the southern outlets to be distributed to areas of need instead of being pushed towards the north in order to enter the rest of the provinces at high prices as a result of transportation costs."
He pointed out that "closing the ports of the south represents a marginalization of Basra and its people, even though it provides the country's budget with more than 90 percent of the revenues," stressing that "the government does not have any justification for keeping the southern ports closed to the entry of foodstuffs." finished 25
