Baghdad: Zaidan Al-Rubaie
The Iraqi capital witnessed new demonstrations in Al-Nusour Square in central Baghdad, during which the participants demanded the writing of a new constitution for the country, changing the form of the political system from parliamentary to presidential or semi-presidential, recovering Iraq's looted money and holding the corrupt and those involved in the bloodshed accountable. Hundreds of Iraqis also demonstrated in Sulaymaniyah, at the invitation of the leader of the New Generation Movement, Shaswar Abdul Wahed, to hold vigils and demonstrations in public squares to demand a change of government in the Kurdistan region.
The head of the bloc in the Iraqi parliament, Representative Sarwa Abdul Wahed, announced the arrest of a number of leaders of the new generation and its deputies, stressing that 30 armed military vehicles are besieging the headquarters of the movement's leader. Abdel Wahed said, "The new generation holds the region and the Democratic Union Party responsible for preserving the life of the movement's president, deputies and leaders," stressing that "embassies and the United Nations have been informed of what is happening."
This comes as the leader of the Sadrist movement, Hazem al-Araji, confirmed the continuation of the sit-in in the Green Zone in central Baghdad. "We will continue the sit-in until the demands are fulfilled," Al-Araji said in a Facebook post. The sit-in of the Sadrist movement's supporters entered its eighth consecutive day, stressing the need not to withdraw from the sit-in, before achieving their demands, which Muqtada al-Sadr stressed, two days ago, including the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of early elections.
Iraq is in a state of tension that has caused political paralysis in the Iraqi parliament, which has come under the control of Sadr's supporters, until the current's demand for its dissolution and early elections are met. Demonstrations by al-Sadr's supporters escalated, following an attempt by the coordination framework to pass the nomination of Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani to take over the formation of a new Iraqi government. The parties in Iraq are responding to the calls for calm launched by the caretaker prime minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, and it is expected that the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada Al-Sadr, and the head of the Al-Fateh Alliance, Hadi Al-Amiri, will hold a dialogue in the next few days.
In the same context, a member of the General Authority of the Wisdom Movement in Iraq, Rahim Al-Aboudi, announced that the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, presented an initiative to resolve the political crisis, the general framework of which is to hold a conference for dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations. He said that the expected visit of Hadi al-Amiri to Muqtada al-Sadr is linked to the results of the expected visit of Blackshart to the coordinating framework.
According to Iraqi media, Rahim Al-Aboudi confirmed that Jeanine Blackshart's visit to Muqtada Al-Sadr came as part of an initiative to resolve the political crisis in Iraq, explaining that Blackshart is currently mediating between the Shiite parties. He added that the general framework of the initiative is to hold a dialogue conference supervised by the United Nations, in which all Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish parties participate.
Blackshart visited the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, at his home in the Hanana area in Najaf, the day before yesterday, Friday, noting that she had held a good meeting with al-Sadr, during which they discussed the importance of finding a solution to the political crisis. A member of the General Authority of the Wisdom Movement indicated that the international envoy intends to convey al-Sadr's response to the initiative, orally or through a visit, to the coordination framework within two days, indicating that the coordination framework will then hold a meeting to discuss al-Sadr's response. Rahim Aboudi stressed that Hadi al-Amiri's visit to Muqtada al-Sadr depends on the results of Blackshart's visit to the coordinating framework, as it will be decided whether or not the visit will take place in light of Muqtada al-Sadr's response.
