The Ministry of Transport has formed a committee to limit and regulate the number of private sector transport vehicles to exclude the old ones and replace them with red buses in Baghdad and the governorates, while it is studying the issuance of subsidized cards to transport students, retirees and vulnerable groups on its buses and vehicles.
The Director of the General Company for Transporting Passengers and Delegations affiliated with the Ministry, Karim Kazem Hussein, told Al-Sabah: His ministry has prepared an integrated plan to activate public transport in Baghdad and open 32 public transport lines out of 72 that will be opened during the coming period in conjunction with projects to relieve congestion, stressing its intention to resume work on the public transport project to all streets of the capital, Baghdad, and the governorates. He revealed that his ministry is studying the issuance of subsidized transport cards for students, retirees and vulnerable groups to travel on red buses, announcing the formation of a committee to regulate and limit the number of private sector citizen transport vehicles, with the aim of excluding the old ones, and replacing them with public transport buses that are characterized by modernity, cleanliness and subsidized prices.
Hussein pointed out that work is underway between his ministry and the local governments in the provinces to activate public transportation and serve various segments of society, which has already begun in the holy Karbala province. At the same time, there is mass transportation in the provinces of Nineveh, Kirkuk, Diyala, Najaf and Basra, which are successful experiments, and there are demands to increase the number of buses in them.
