The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a human rights organization in the United Kingdom, accused the Iraqi “Al-Abdal” faction and “Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq” of smuggling drugs from Syria to Iraq, along with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

The observatory, which includes hundreds of activists on the ground, stated that "drug smuggling operations into Iraq are monopolized by certain militias, namely: the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, the Lebanese Hezbollah, and the (Al-Abadal) militia and Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq militia of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization."

He added that these operations are led by “military leaders of those militias, most notably (Hajj Mahdi) of Iranian nationality, (Abu Ritaj al-Iraqi), commander of the al-Abdal militia, (Abu Ahmed al-Iraqi), commander of Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq militia, (Hajj Abu Safi al-Lebanese), a leader in Hezbollah. Lebanese, and (Hajj Hussein Ali Hussein), a leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Regarding how to carry out smuggling, the Syrian Observatory indicated that it is “according to the quantities to be smuggled. Small shipments of Captagon pills and H-Pose are transported in military vehicles belonging to the aforementioned militias through their (military and illegal) crossings without being inspected by anyone. While large quantities of narcotics are transported through trucks with strict protection from militia military vehicles.”

And he added, "drugs are placed within food items, such as large-sized bags of rice and sugar, for example, and in vegetable and fruit boxes to camouflage them."

The Syrian Observatory reviewed the most prominent points of drug smuggling into Iraqi territory, which are used by the Iranian-affiliated factions, according to the Observatory.

These points are “the military gate south of the city of Albukamal and managed by the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Militia, an illegal crossing in the village of Al-Hari located on the border between the two countries and managed by the Lebanese Hezbollah, the railway crossing located to the west of the village of Al-Hari on the border with the two countries is managed by the Revolutionary Guards.” The Iranian Akashat Crossing located in the Al-Bukamal desert on the border with the two countries is managed by the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, the Al-Sanjaq Crossing located in the Al-Bukamal countryside on the border with the two countries is managed by the Iraqi Hezbollah, and the Al-Hawija Crossing located in the Al-Bukamal countryside on the border with the two countries is managed by the Lebanese Hezbollah.” .

According to the observatory, the drugs to be smuggled are stored at specific points, whether within the manufacturing plants themselves, or within warehouses subject to strict security protection.

The most prominent of these warehouses and houses were seized in the city of al-Mayadin in Deir ez-Zor governorate, which borders with Iraq, which are “warehouses within the reservoirs and farms areas on the outskirts of al-Mayadin, houses seized in the neighborhoods of al-Qusour and al-Omal in Deir ez-Zor, warehouses within the Hatla area in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, warehouses on the outskirts of the city of Albukamal. east of Deir ez-Zor.
