An international institute reported that Britain still had an important role in helping Iraq carry out reform and hold the corrupt accountable, noting that the factors that helped spark the October uprising still exist. According to a report by (The National News), translated by (Al-Mada),
"A political expert specialized in Iraqi affairs indicated that Britain, almost 20 years after the change of the previous regime, has a vital role that it can play in reforming the Iraqi government, holding the corrupt accountable, and calling for a change within the country's corrupt political system."
The report continued, "A new generation, after two decades, was born in Iraq and raised in countries where the necessities of basic services such as education and health care are not guaranteed."
He pointed out that "corruption is rampant everywhere," and found that "the dawn of a new day for the hopes and aspirations of many people for well-being seems to be nothing more than a dream far from being realized."
And the report stated, “The medicines that are given to patients in hospitals in many cases are close to or have exceeded the expiry date.”
He stressed, "Schools lack the resources that provide students with the foundations they need to excel, and unemployment is a bleak outlook for many young graduates."
The report stressed, "The accumulated hardships facing the people of Iraq, who number 40.2 million people, motivate many to wonder why they have to struggle for the necessities and basics in their oil-rich country."
"The injustice that hits the country makes people suffer and die without anyone knowing about them," said Renad Mansour, of the Gatham Institute for Studies in London, who has prepared a research on Iraq.
Mansour continued, "The influence that Britain still enjoys in Iraq cannot be underestimated, and it must use it to stand up to the corrupt in the country and hold them accountable."
Mansour pointed out that "Britain has a role to play in achieving stability in Iraq, not only in the short term."
Mansour stressed, "The main aspect is that there be a strategy in the longer term while the current crisis is being addressed." Mansour noted, "The Iraqis always say that they have one of the richest countries in the world, but they have not seen this wealth or benefited from it."
Mansour added, "When you go to Basra, for example, you cannot imagine that you are standing on a land full of wealth, yet it is still a poverty-stricken area."
Mansour explained, "Many members of the ruling elite do not use the services of their country, as they leave for hospitals outside Iraq and send their children to schools outside Iraq."
Mansour went on to say, "These ruling elites have acquired huge amounts of Iraq's wealth... It is the corrupt regime that harms many of the people of the country."
The report continues, that “popular protests that started in October 2019 and included all parts of the country against rampant corruption motivated people to take action.”
He added, "The authorities suppressed the protests with violence, which killed more than 600 people and injured thousands of others."
The report considered, "The factors that prompted the demonstrators to take to the street are still present, and Baghdad has recently witnessed other protests to mark the third anniversary of its launch."
Mansour returns to say, “What people are complaining about is not the sect to which the official belongs, his religion or his race, but rather the political system and corruption that caused injustice and injustice.”
The report talks about "Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi assuming responsibility in 2020 by making many promises of reform and freedoms, after months of political instability."
The report stated, "The changes that the protesters dreamed of and demanded did not materialize, and that their daily living lives did not improve, two years after Al-Kazemi assumed responsibility."
The researcher Mansour noted, "None of the promises were fulfilled in the pursuit of positive change in Iraq."
The Iraqis had revived a few days ago the third anniversary of the October uprising with demonstrations in Tahrir and Al-Nusour Squares in Baghdad and other squares in the rest of the provinces, and this occasion witnessed some frictions, resulting in a number of wounded.
