Al-Araji proposes conducting a public opinion poll on the Science Service Law in Iraq
Shafaq News/ The National Security Adviser, Qassem Al-Araji, proposed today, Wednesday, conducting a public opinion poll on whether or not to proceed with the Legislation of the Military Service Law (compulsory conscription) after the attempt to present it in Parliament for the first reading provoked mixed reactions among the popular and political circles in Iraq.
This came during his presidency today, a workshop entitled (The Law of Science Service According to the Iraqi National Security Vision), which was held at the Al-Nahrain Center for Strategic Studies of the Chancellery, with the participation of security agencies, academic bodies, research centers, civil ministries and the private sector, and a representative of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee.
Al-Araji began the work of the workshop with a speech in which he stressed the importance of conducting extensive discussions by the concerned authorities and specialists, as well as engaging public opinion by conducting opinion polls, as well as studying the draft law according to the Iraqi national security vision, from various aspects.
Al-Araji also stressed the importance of studying the extent of the need for the law and the expected numbers for its inclusion, the requirements of training and accommodation centers and the required financial allocations, in addition to studying the extent of its impact on the workforce and the societal aspect.
The workshop witnessed extensive discussions of the Science Service Law, by specialists and stakeholders, where the participants unanimously agreed on the need for an extensive study of the subject and its impact on Iraqi national security.
The workshop concluded with a recommendation to hold other workshops, to come up with recommendations that enhance Iraqi national security.
Last Sunday, the Iraqi parliament failed to present the draft law on military service (compulsory conscription) for the first reading during a session it held under the chairmanship of Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi.
On (August 31, 2021), the former Iraqi government headed by Mustafa Al-Kazemi approved, "in principle", the draft compulsory service law, and referred it to the Iraqi Parliament.
And former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi pledged to pass this law before the end of the current parliamentary session, because political differences prevented it.
And the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi parliament had previously announced the readiness of the compulsory service law in the country for approval by Parliament, and stressed the importance of this law at the current stage, and indicated that its approval requires “will and political consensus.”
And the Ministry of Defense announced in the year 2020 sending a draft of the compulsory conscription law to the State Shura for legal review.
Military service was mandatory in Iraq until the overthrow of the former regime in 2003, and the US civil administrator Paul Bremer dissolving the former Iraqi army and re-establishing a new army based on volunteering rather than conscription.
