The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that an explosion occurred inside the Kormor gas field, noting that the investigations did not reach results proving that the missile attack was carried out.
On Friday (January 13, 2022), the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ahmed Al-Mufti, said that “an explosion occurred in the Kormor field, and that the cause and nature of the explosion are still unknown,” adding that “the security forces have begun to open an investigation into the explosion.”
And the Mufti added, “We refute all the information of the local media. So far, investigations into the recent attack on the Kormor field have not concluded that the attack was carried out by missiles or Katyushas.
The production of gas in the Kormor field is normal and there is no problem with it.
The aforementioned field was previously attacked by eight missiles last October, without the production being affected by the bombing.
The Kormor field is one of the largest gas fields within the Kurdistan Region, and it supplies electric power stations with liquefied natural gas, in addition to securing the population's need for cooking and heating gas.
The Emirati companies “Dana Gas” and “Al Hilal” are operating in the field.
According to the results of the investigation of a previous joint committee regarding the exposure of the Kormor field to the bombing, the closest point of the missile fall is about 30 kilometers from the federal government forces, and the security gap between the federal forces and the Peshmerga is about 9 to 10 kilometers.
And the United States announced, through its State Department spokesman, Ned Price, in a previous statement, that Washington stands with its partners in condemning the three missile attacks on the oil and gas infrastructure in Sulaymaniyah.
Price considered that the attacks "aimed at undermining economic stability and challenging Iraqi sovereignty," calling for "the investigation of these attacks and the prosecution of those responsible."
