Observers and politicians consider women working in the oil sector to be an important segment that runs oil directorates and departments as experts and engineers in this vital field. Nevertheless, according to observers, they do not reach the "sovereign positions" in oil decision-making due to the predominance of the male character over these positions and the leadership of oil companies. big.
The representative of the Parliamentary Oil and Energy Committee, Bassem Al-Gharibawi, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "There is no objection to employing women in the oil sector, except for some jobs that require muscular effort and field follow-up in open areas, such as oil exploration or excavations, where they are suitable for the male component." more than the female component, and these matters are proven in the oil employment contracts.”
And he indicated that "in the departments of the ministry's headquarters and in the general directorates, there are many women who head important divisions and directorates in the structure of the oil administration."
For her part, the economist Dr. Salam Sumaisem said, in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "In Iraq, there are many women working in the oil field, and we have in the departments of the faculties of engineering women in oil and chemical specializations, as in oil fields or in research work or specialists in oil economy".
However, Sumaisem expressed her regret and disappointment that these women did not reach "sovereign positions" because of what she described as the "masculine" predominance of those positions, adding, "Also, competent professional women usually face difficulty in gradually reaching leadership positions." And she indicated that "therefore, one of the standards adopted in international studies is to calculate the number of these women who have reached the ranks of decision-making, whether in the oil field or other vital fields, and this indicates the value of gender discrimination against women."
She pointed out that "the absence of women in the (Parliamentary Oil and Energy Committee) comes because of the prevailing view that the committee is purely (men), being subject to political factors because oil is a sovereign issue, and this indicates that the women who came to parliament did not come according to a political program or vision." She clearly wants to play a political role to serve her community.”
Women's rights activist, Dr. Bushra Al-Obeidi, believes that with regard to "the oil sector as a job, the number of women employed in it is good, but the management of the oil sectors is of great importance, as the percentage of women is almost non-existent, and there is no women's management of oil companies and sectors."
Al-Obaidi added, in an interview with "Al-Sabah", that "this is due to the masculine perspective that such works, sites and positions are the monopoly of men, and therefore they are forbidden to women."
