Baghdad and Tehran agree to implement the railway link across Basra

Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs Mahdi Safri announced that Iraq and Iran signed an agreement to implement the railway linking Iran to Iraq through the Iranian city of Shalamcheh and the city of Basra.
Safri added, in a press statement, that "the Iraqi Minister of Transport's recent visit to Tehran and his meeting with his Iranian counterpart resulted in the signing of this agreement, which is one of the strategic lines in terms of trade, as it connects Iraq with Central Asia as well as Iran and Syria, all the way to Turkey and Europe."
He explained that "Iraq allocated 230 million dollars for the construction of this line in Iraqi territory," noting that "the agreement also included the establishment of a rapid land line linking the Iranian city of Khosravi on the central border with the capital, Baghdad."
