    Economy News - Baghdad
Today, Sunday, the Ministry of Transport announced the start of expropriation operations and the removal of encroachments on lands located within the path of the railway link between the city of Basra and Iran.
This strategic transportation project aims to improve and facilitate the transportation of millions of travelers and visitors between the two countries, and forms part of efforts to strengthen the infrastructure of the Iraqi economy.
The Iranian government confirmed its commitment to bear the costs of removing encroachments and expropriations on the lands included in the project, amounting to five million dollars.
The Ministry has coordinated with the Basra Governorate government to ensure the effective conduct of operations.
In a statement by the Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, Maytham Al-Safi, he confirmed that the agreement concluded with the Iranian side includes the construction of the railway line, stations and sites inside Iraq, while Iran will undertake the construction of the navigation bridge on the Shatt al-Arab and the removal of mines along a length of 16 km within the project’s route.
Al-Safi added that this project is an essential pillar in strengthening the infrastructure of the Iraqi economy, and contributes to strengthening communication with neighboring countries and countries of Central Asia.
Al-Safi stressed that the Ministry has taken several measures to complete the project implementation requirements, pointing out the importance of railway connectivity in strengthening the national economy and raising its ability to communicate regionally.
