The academic sector and higher education in Iraq suffers from several disturbing challenges, the most important of which is tens of thousands of graduates annually with specializations that have caused the labor market to be “satiated,” while a member of the Parliamentary Higher Education Committee, Muhammad Qutaiba, monitors three challenges facing this sector.
Qutayba said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", that "large numbers are accepted annually in Iraqi universities, whether governmental or private, in hundreds of specializations according to the determinants of lineage, accompanied by the graduation of large numbers of holders of bachelor's degrees."
He added, "Three challenges face the academic dimension, represented by the need for government openness to accommodate graduates in providing job opportunities for them, because the government institution will not be able to accommodate everyone with such large numbers of graduates, in addition to the need to create new specializations that are compatible with the need of the labor market."
He pointed out that "the file of unemployment among graduates will turn into a major crisis if there is no clear future plan that adopts paths capable of giving a glimmer of hope to tens of thousands of graduates annually."
Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, during his meeting with a number of university professors, had referred to "the problem of the inadequacy of the outputs of higher education to the needs of the labor market, and the lack of need for some specializations that constitute a burden on the state, while there are new and innovative professions that require qualification for their practice and investment," stressing The necessity of "focusing on the disciplines that our economy and institutions need, and for universities to become an arena for solving real problems and developing systems in the field of governance, and solving the problem of expansion and exceptions that negatively affected scientific sobriety."
