Experts call for international sponsorship of the "development path"

A number of specialists in political and economic affairs questioned guarantees that the (Development Path) project would not be used as a pressure card against Iraq in the future, especially in the water-quota negotiations with Turkey. Experts and specialists called for finding international sponsorship to protect the project from political fluctuations.
The writer and researcher on political affairs, Dr. Qasim Balshan Al-Tamimi, explained in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "(The development path) is a step for transforming Iraq into a multipolar economy, as it starts from the southernmost point of Iraq to the farthest point in the north, and its length reaches a point The Iraqi-Turkish border is 1200 km.
Al-Tamimi asked: What are the Turkish guarantees not to impede the passage of this road in the future? In other words, how do we ensure that Türkiye will not work to stop the continuation of this path in the future?
He added that Iraq has agreements and treaties with Turkey in this regard since the Lausanne Agreement in 1923, the Friendship Agreement in 1946, the agreements of 1982 and 1992 and many other agreements, pointing out that "large parts of these agreements have not been implemented."
Al-Tamimi called for "finding a guarantee before spending huge amounts of money on the (development path), involving the United Nations, and that the path be under international auspices and not subject to political fluctuations," noting that "Iraq can make (development path) enjoy international protection away from the political and military differences between Baghdad, Ankara and the rest of the countries in the region.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport held important discussions with its Turkish counterpart on the "development path".
A statement by the ministry said that an Iraqi technical delegation from the Ministry of Transport, headed by the Director General of the General Railway Company, Eng. And its economic importance to Iraq, Turkey, the countries of the region and the world.
The statement added that the director of the Turkish Railways Department, Hassan Bezouk, confirmed that his country's government attaches great importance to the "Development Road" project, and is willing to provide all kinds of support, including construction, courses, systems, and others in the railway sector.
In addition, the political analyst, Omar Al-Nasser, called in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "The government takes a proactive move to confront any possible scenario in the long term in the event that the (development road) that will link East with West through Iraq and Turkey is launched, especially since the atmosphere of relations Diplomacy with Ankara has gone through periods of fluctuations and tensions and was marred by a lot of tension, given that the link with Europe will be through Turkey, which was the first country to welcome and express its willingness to enter into this strategic and vital project, as it will achieve a great economic leap for Ankara through the decrease in the cost of exporting Turkish goods. And increase transit fares in its territories.
Nasser did not rule out that there would be future understandings to discuss the issue of passing Qatari gas to Europe through the same route, which in turn would enhance Turkey's geopolitical economic position, realizing that there was a fear of a repeat of Ukraine's scenario with Russia when it tightened its grip on the (Nordstream 1) project and controlled transport lines. gas going to Europe.
