    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (August 27, 2023), the Independents Alliance warned of the exacerbation of the risk of using corrupt funds in the provincial elections, while the judiciary demanded the formation of a court specialized in corruption cases in the elections.
The coalition said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", that "we strongly warn of the exacerbation of the risk of using corrupt funds in the provincial elections," expressing "its deep concern about the almost certain information being circulated stating that a number of political blocs are allocating huge sums of money for Acquisition of more than a number of seats in the provinces.
The coalition stressed that "manipulating the election results through the use of corrupt funds constitutes a real threat to the will of the people and their political decision," directing "an urgent appeal to the Electoral Commission, the Integrity Commission and the Presidency of the Public Prosecution Office, in order to allocate hotlines to report cases of suspicious and exaggerated spending, before And during the election campaigns, in order to quickly diagnose suspicions of the use of corrupt political money and take the necessary and deterrent measures for that, pursuant to the provisions of the Political Parties Law No. 36 of 2015 and the activation of the Integrity and Illicit Gain Commission Law No. 30 of 2011 amended with regard to the inflation of corruption funds and their use in political work.
The statement demanded, "The Supreme Judicial Council to assign these bodies by forming a court specialized in issues of corruption in the elections and facilitating the procedures for filing lawsuits against anyone who uses corrupt money in order to distort the election results." Stressing that "the elections as a whole are a real opportunity for the Iraqi people to express their will freely and impartially, without influence or interference from the influential political forces that have established economic bodies to collect money illegally and use it to manipulate the election results in order to stay in power for a longer period."
The coalition pointed out "the importance of having strict monitoring and follow-up mechanisms for the source of funds that will be spent in the electoral process, and prosecuting any violations related to buying votes or attempts to distort the election results, as well as demanding oversight bodies, civil society institutions, the media, emerging political movements and independent personalities to play an effective role." In ensuring the integrity of the electoral process and exposing any abuses that occur.
And "because of the importance of the matter and its danger to the future of the electoral process," the coalition affirmed "the right of every Iraqi citizen to free and democratic choice," announcing its "absolute rejection of any attempt to neutralize this basic right," noting that it "will not tolerate any attempt to buy votes or falsifying election results.
In conclusion, the coalition renewed "its principled decision to boycott the provincial council elections and calls for postponing the date for holding them in order to achieve a fair, just and real competitive atmosphere, with its categorical refusal to exclude any political party by blocs that believe that elections in this atmosphere are an opportunity to pounce on opponents or competitors." .
It is noteworthy that the government decided to hold the provincial council elections on December 18, 10 years after they were held for the last time.
