Iraq produces about 20 thousand tons per day of waste, which is disposed of in primitive traditional ways, while other countries deal with this waste as they deal with natural resources, as it can be converted into many materials that enter agriculture, industry and others, which raises talk about the necessity Availability of waste recycling plants with international standards.
The media director of the Ministry of Environment, Amir Ali Al-Hassoun, criticized the successive governments' handling of this important file before and after 2003, describing it as "primitive", praising the current government's approach to making up for what was missed and its orientation towards a culture of sustainability

Al-Hassoun told Al-Sabah: “Waste is a problem that the Ministry of Environment suffers from, because of the mechanism of landfilling waste, especially if it is a variety of waste, and because it is not properly invested, which leads to
to waste and pollution. He added, “Before 2003, Iraq went through many decades of a culture of primitive municipality dealing with waste, as municipal departments used to bury waste in an environmentally unacceptable way,” noting that “the post-2003 local and federal governments were supposed to put in place infrastructure projects for benefiting from waste.” And recycling it to benefit from it in the fields of energy,
fertilizers, and others ».
And he continued, “20 years have passed and the competent authorities have not moved to take care of these projects,” and stressed that “the current government tends to make up for what has been missed and insists that environmental concern and environmental work be at the forefront of investment projects and titles,” pointing to the existence of “a change in new projects, where A residential complex for modern sustainability and the modern cities project, oil, electricity and agricultural projects have been inaugurated, in conjunction with
real steps for sustainability.
Al-Hassoun warned that "the government is heading towards real and proper dealing with waste recycling," and expressed his hope that "the new construction projects will be completed and benefited from instead of being buried in an unacceptable way."
The Iraqi citizen secretes 2 kg of waste per day, which is a huge amount that can be turned into raw materials for
industry and agriculture.
The environmental activist, Ahmed Saleh Nema, criticized the existence of only one integrated waste recycling plant, pointing out that the developed countries of the world consider waste an “invaluable wealth.” Nehme told Al-Sabah: “All countries of the developed world consider waste an invaluable wealth that is converted into money or useful raw materials.” He added that “gases emitted from waste can be used for energy, heating, and electricity generation.” Millions of tons of waste annually, and he criticized “the existence of only one integrated
waste recycling plant in Sulaymaniyah.”
He added, "This factory does not meet the purpose, and Iraq cannot be an investor of this wealth with such capabilities," and pointed out that "it is possible to benefit from the waste in the production of wooden boards, cardboard, plastic granules, methane gas, etc., fertilizers, plastic cashews, and the production of other raw materials."
And while waiting for attention to be paid to this wasted wealth in Iraq, the facts of international figures say that the United States of America produces approximately 254 million tons of household waste annually, about 35 to 40 percent of which is recycled. The value of the waste market is close to $50 billion, and the gas is collected in 520 landfills and used to produce enough electricity to light
about 700,000 homes.
While Sweden occupies the first place in terms of the remaining waste for landfilling, as it accounts for 1 percent of its total waste, which amounts to about 4.5 million tons annually.
