Shafaq News/ The American magazine "Newsweek" reported that prominent Republican Senator Mitch McConnell amended the term "axis of evil", to now include, in his opinion, China and Russia, thus removing Iraq from this axis that was announced by former US President George Bush about 21 years ago.
Under the new title “Axis of Evil,” Newsweek said in a report translated by Shafaq News Agency: McConnell, the Senate minority leader, used the controversial new term "axis of evil" to refer to the growing global threats to the United States and its NATO allies.
The report indicated that McConnell made these statements during television interviews he conducted with Fox News and CBS News, during which he addressed the threat posed by Russia, China, and Iran to Western countries, the latter of which gained renewed global attention amid its support for the Hamas movement. Which launched a historic attack against Israel on October 7 of this year.
According to the report, Russia has been engaged in a bloody war with Ukraine since February 2022, and US President Joe Biden has repeatedly called on Congress to support it, and recently requested that additional billions of military support be passed to Ukraine and Israel together, while China has become considered more hostile in recent years. towards Taiwan, which led many observers to expect a conflict between the two parties in the near future.
The report quoted McConnell as saying, “You have to respond to the situations that already exist and pose a threat to the United States,” adding, “The Iranians also pose a threat to us, and therefore it is an emergency, for us to step up and deal with this axis of evil, China, Russia, and Iran, because it constitutes a direct threat.” "For the United States. In many ways, the world is more vulnerable today than it was in my lifetime."
McConnell explained, "There is an axis of evil in the world: China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran, and we need to confront the axis of evil, not try to do business with them."
The report stated that the phrase "axis of evil" was the most famous phrase used by Bush after the attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington, referring at that time to Iraq, North Korea, and Iran.
The report continued; This term has since become a pretext for launching the “global war on terrorism” and the “eternal wars” in Iraq and Afghanistan, noting that Washington has recently withdrawn from Afghanistan, while these two wars have come to be seen as costly and unnecessary.
The report recalled that Bush said at the time in a speech, “that countries like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute the axis of evil, and are arming themselves to threaten world peace, and that by seeking to obtain weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger, and they can provide these weapons to terrorists, and give them "The means that suit their hatred, they can attack our allies or try to blackmail the United States." Bush added at the time, "In any of these countries and in these cases, the price of indifference will be catastrophic."
