Iraq has become an attractive destination for Russian companies investing in the Iranian oil and gas sectors, as well as Iranian specialists in the two sectors .
The Iranian newspaper "Hum Mihin" revealed, in a recent report, that Russian companies that were scheduled to invest in the Iranian oil and gas sectors according to memorandums of understanding worth $120 billion left Iran after receiving attractive offers from Iraq to invest in it .
The reformist Iranian newspaper added, "Some provisions of the oil agreements with Iran were one of the reasons for their fleeing Iran and heading to Iraq to invest in it ."
The Iranian "Hum Mihin" confirmed that providing these benefits to companies operating in the international oil market is "tempting and attractive," adding that Iraq, in addition to attracting foreign investment companies from Iran, has also begun to attract Iranian specialists working in the oil and gas sectors with wages amounting to 5 to 10 times what they receive. They get it in Iran .
The newspaper quoted an unnamed Iranian source as confirming that the main Iranian industries are losing their balance of specialized manpower, stressing that the wages offered by Iraq today are the highest in the region .
The newspaper also pointed out that Iraq has become more focused than ever on extraction from fields shared with Iran, explaining that when either party extracts in the shared fields, the pressure on the other party that is not extracting will decrease, and then the reserves will go to the side that extracts .
Exploration operations conducted by Western companies in Iraq during the last decade revealed the presence of 12 fields on the Iraqi-Iranian border, most of which are located inside Iraq and a small part in Iran, and contain more than 95 billion barrels of oil, which is the largest reserve discovered during the past two decades among OPEC countries. .
Iraq shares with Iran five oil fields: Al-Fakka, Majnoon, Abu Gharb, Bazargan, and Naft Khana, while Iraq owns other fields near the border with Iran, the most important of which are Al-Nour, Aban, and Baidar Gharb .
In 2009, a crisis erupted after an Iranian force stormed the Iraqi side of the joint Fakkah field and raised the Iranian flag above it, before withdrawing at a later time .
In 2019, during the visit of former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Baghdad, Iraq announced that it had reached understandings related to the demarcation of the land borders and the waters of the Shatt al-Arab, as well as the joint oil fields. However, none of the technical committees that the two sides agreed to form had begun their work and no announcement was made. There has been development on both sides in this file in particular .
