Yesterday, Sunday, the Federal Supreme Court decided to postpone the decision on the salaries of Kurdistan Region employees and the region’s elections law.
A statement received by the Federal Court (Al-Mada) stated that “it was decided to postpone the decision on the salaries of Kurdistan region employees and the region’s parliament elections law.”
He added, “The postponement will be until the 21st of this month.”
The Federal Supreme Court decided early last week to postpone consideration of the Kurdistan Region’s election law until the 18th, Sunday of this month.
This comes at a time when there are two lawsuits filed by Kurdistan political parties in the Federal Court regarding the quota seats and the conduct of the Kurdistan Parliament elections. They were scheduled to be decided on the third of last December, but they were postponed.
Complaints were submitted against five articles of the Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections Law, related to the number of seats, single and multiple electoral districts, and the number of quota seats. They were submitted by Ziad Jabbar, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc in the fifth Kurdistan parliamentary session, and Aman Najib Shamoun, the Christian representative in the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Council. .
According to Article 36 of the legislative elections law in the region, five quota seats in the Kurdistan Parliament will be allocated to the Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Assyrians, with one seat for the Armenian component, as well as five seats for the Turkmen.
In 1992, the first parliamentary elections were held in Kurdistan. In 2004, the Election Law was amended to remove Article 9, which stipulated that the Kurdistan Region must consist of several electoral districts.
