According to the World Water Development Report 2024 issued by UNESCO on behalf of the United Nations Commission on Water Resources, tensions over water are exacerbating conflicts around the world.

According to the report, 2.2 billion people today still live without access to safely managed drinking water, and 3.5 billion people lack access to safely managed sanitation services. The UN goal of ensuring access for all by 2030 therefore remains elusive, and there is reason to fear that these inequalities will continue to widen.

The report stated that between 2002 and 2021, drought affected more than 1.4 billion people. As of 2022, nearly half of the world's population experienced severe water scarcity for at least part of the year, while a quarter faced "extremely high" levels of water stress, using more than 80% of their annual supply of renewable freshwater. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of these phenomena, with severe risks to social stability.

Data from the World Resources Institute (WRI) indicates that 25 countries are currently exposed to very high water stress annually, meaning they use more than 80% of their renewable water supply for irrigation, livestock, industry and domestic needs. Even short-term drought puts these places at risk of running out of water and sometimes prompts governments to turn off the taps.
According to data (WRI), the five countries most exposed to water stress are Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, and Qatar. Water stress in these countries is mostly due to low supply, combined with demand from domestic, agricultural and industrial use.

The regions that suffer most from water stress are the Middle East and North Africa, where 83% of the population is exposed to very high water stress, and South Asia, where 74% of the population is exposed.

By 2050, an additional billion people are expected to live under very high water stress, even if the world limits global temperature increases to 1.3°C to 2.4°C (2.3°F to 4.3°F) by 2050, forecasts indicate. 2100, which is an optimistic scenario.

The report added that global water demand is expected to increase by 20% to 25% by 2050, and for the Middle East and North Africa region, this means that 100% of the population will live under very high water stress by 2050. This is a problem not only For consumers and industries that depend on water, but for political stability. In Iran, for example, decades of water mismanagement and unsustainable use of water for agriculture have already caused protests – tensions that will intensify as water stress worsens.

Here is a look in the infographic below at the classification of countries according to expectations of the extent of their exposure to water shortages in 2050.
