Agriculture contracts with international companies to manufacture modern irrigation systems

The Ministry of Agriculture has contracted with international companies specialized in manufacturing modern irrigation systems, as part of a government program to modernize irrigation methods to confront the ongoing drought and the significant decline in Iraq’s water share over more than two decades.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the aim of the contracts is to encourage farmers to adopt techniques to reduce water losses and rationalize its use while increasing agricultural productivity,” indicating that “the Cabinet’s instructions stipulated encouraging farmers to provide agricultural loans without Benefits on purchasing sprinkler irrigation systems, and facilitating procedures for importing modern irrigation systems by the private sector by exempting them from any import duties to encourage them to switch to modern irrigation.”
Al-Jubouri stated that “the Ministry sought to support and develop modern agricultural technologies, by contracting with the Ministry of Industry and Minerals to equip pivotal irrigation systems with a capacity of 60, 80, and 120 dunums, and equipping them for farmers with a 30% support rate, and for a payback period of 10 years,” indicating “the completion of the contract with a company.” Bauer, Austria, with the aim of confronting water scarcity on the one hand and introducing and adopting modern irrigation technologies in the agricultural sector on the other hand. For his part, Ahmed Al-Issawi, a member of the Executive Office of the General Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Societies, believes that farmers’ need for sprayers is more than the Ministry’s capacity.
Al-Issawi added to “Al-Sabah” that “the Ministry of Agriculture’s support for farmers regarding sprinklers may be non-existent, as it needs a lot of money to be able to reach the level to which the farmer aspires and the agricultural reality.” Al-Issawi stated that “farmers are suffering from the problem of high prices of sprinklers,” calling for “solving the problem of installments and guarantees with banks, to purchase modern technologies and for a period longer than the plan prepared by the ministry,” explaining that “the ministry’s plan is to cover one million dunums within 3 years with sprinklers, while There are 17 million arable acres that need these sprays, which requires waiting years to cover all the lands.” Al-Issawi continued, “Farmers need the support of the Agricultural Bank by guaranteeing the land, for example, or agreeing to a single sponsor, so that existing companies and agricultural associations can obtain modern technologies.”
