    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Iraq's import map last year, 2023, revealed a huge shift towards Brazil and Japan and a decrease from Saudi Arabia and Germany.
Data published by the head of the Future Iraq Center showed that imports from Brazil increased by 110%, while they increased from Japan by 48% and from India by 41%, and decreased from Saudi Arabia by 15% and from Germany by about 13%.
The head of the center, Manar Al-Obaidi, said in a statement, received by “Baghdad Today”, “According to the data of the official customs authorities issued by the most important countries exporting various goods to Iraq, which are 11 countries, the total of Iraq’s official imports from these countries alone in 2023 reached a value of 67.25 billion dollars, with an increase The rate reached 6% compared to 2022, as the value of these countries’ exports to Iraq was $63.5 billion.
He added, "The exports of countries to Iraq, excluding Iran, amounted to 58 billion dollars, an increase of 2.8% compared to 2022, which was 56 billion dollars."
Al-Obaidi pointed out, “It is expected that the exports of other countries not mentioned to Iraq will amount to 3-5 billion dollars, and therefore the total exports of countries to Iraq in 2023 will be worth 71 billion dollars.”
He explained, "These imports - with the exception of Iranian imports - require an average daily purchase of hard currency amounting to approximately 206 million dollars, and if we add to them imports of services that include (purchasing software, purchasing licenses, electronic services, and others) for which there are no clear statistics... “It is expected that today’s need for dollars for external transfers (excluding Iranian imports) amounts to 225 million dollars, to cover all of Iraq’s needs for dollars for trade purposes only.”
He continued, "As for Iran, although Iraq's imports from Iran amounted to 9.3 billion dollars in 2023, according to official Iranian data, more than 65% of these exports are gas to operate power stations and also purchase electricity, and thus the volume of exported goods increases." From Iran, it does not exceed the barrier of 3.7 billion dollars, and therefore the value of the money needed to cover commodity imports from Iran, except gas and electricity, daily amounts to only 10.8 million dollars.”
Al-Obaidi noted that “these numbers are official numbers issued by the private customs of those countries and have nothing to do with Iraqi data and have nothing to do with changing the value of invoices or changing the type of goods, as may happen in some border crossings in Iraq, and therefore the accuracy rate of these data is very high if not.” It is not 100% accurate, as most of the countries mentioned in the study use electronic systems to control and register exports, and it is difficult for them to be tampered with.”
