Shafaq News/ The Al-Hikma Movement, led by Ammar Al-Hakim, revealed today, Saturday, the existence of a political movement aimed at presenting the Sunni political forces with a single candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives within the next few days.
Member of the movement’s general body, Ahmed Al-Issawi, told Shafaq News Agency, “There is a movement led by various political parties in order for the Sunni political forces to present one candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives during the next few days, to resolve this crisis. Otherwise, a new session will be held with two candidates and whoever gets the highest.” votes and he will be the president.”
Al-Issawi stated, “There is no political party with Mohsen Al-Mandalawi remaining as Speaker of Parliament until the end of the parliamentary session. This is the entitlement of the Sunni component, and we do not want any imbalance in the balances and entitlements, and for this reason all the forces of the coordination framework are working to speed up the resolution of this file.”
Regarding the date for resolving the issue of naming a new speaker of Parliament, Al-Issawi said, “Perhaps during this week a new election session will be scheduled, after the round of dialogues currently taking place between all political parties.”
More than a week ago, the Iraqi Council of Representatives held a session dedicated to electing a new president, attended by about 300 representatives. The Council failed to elect the president in its first round, forcing it to hold a second electoral round in which Representative Salem Al-Issawi from the Sovereignty Alliance led by Khamis Al-Khanjar received 158 votes, while Representative Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani received 137 votes for the Progress Alliance led by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi, and Representative Amer Abdul-Jabbar, three votes, while the invalid votes reached 13 votes, and Parliament went to a third round, according to a statement from the Media Department of the House of Representatives received by Shafaq News Agency.
However, the third round did not see the light of day due to a quarrel between representatives that developed into a fistfight, as the MPs’ phones documented a verbal altercation and fistfights between representatives from the front and colleagues from other blocs against the backdrop of the election of a Speaker of Parliament.
The scene did not differ much from the session of January 3, 2024, the scenes that the representatives leaked from the session yesterday evening, Saturday, of verbal altercations and clashes of hands, which were witnessed and experienced five months ago, with a scenario repeated by the representatives of the Taqadum Party, which is headed by Muhammad Al-Halbousi.
