The Prime Minister launches two giant strategic projects

Yesterday, Saturday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani inaugurated the associated gas processing project in the Halfaya field in Maysan Governorate, which will contribute to the operation of power stations and the production of liquid fuel. He also inaugurated the Azmara unit project in the Basra refinery, which will secure the country’s need for improved gasoline.
Al-Sudani stressed, in a statement, that “the specific project comes within efforts to increase the benefit of oil and gas wealth, in order to stop the burning of associated gas and the waste it entails and its impact on the environment and health.”
He stated that "gas will contribute directly to the operation of electrical stations and stop imports and the hard currency it depletes annually, as gas production has realistically increased from 2,972 million standard cubic feet per day in (2022) to the level of 3,100 million standard cubic feet per day."
He added, "The investment rate for associated gas has increased from 50% to 61%, and efforts and plans are continuing to invest in all the gas produced. The goal is to reach a (zero) rate of burned gas, by 2028."
The project contributes to supplying the national grid to operate the Amara Governmental and Maysan Investment Electrical Stations, generating more than 1,200 megawatts.
The Prime Minister then made a visit to Basra Governorate, and inaugurated the Azmara Unit Project in the Basra Refinery, which will supply the country's need for improved gasoline.
After touring the project, Al-Sudani pointed out the importance of opening the Al-Azmra unit in the refinery, and the provision it represents for the country’s need for high-octane gasoline, stressing that “these projects will stop the process of wasting wealth and put an end to the import of petroleum products, which has continued for many years.” He explained that the goal is to increase production capacity and improve product specifications, explaining that gasoline production in 2022 was (15) thousand cubic meters per day, while production today reached (24.8) thousand cubic meters per day.
The project, which was implemented by the National Effort at the (Southern Refineries Company) in cooperation with supporting companies, is considered one of the important projects in increasing the production of improved gasoline, with a production capacity of (11) thousand barrels per day, and it will contribute to reducing the quantities of imported gasoline, which will save more than 200 million Dollars annually.
The Prime Minister also made a visit to the Basra refinery projects and their expansions, in a field follow-up within the government’s path to completing lagging projects, increasing the production of oil derivatives, and maximizing returns from hydrocarbon wealth.
Al-Sudani visited the site of the FCC cofactor crushing project, which has reached 81% completion. It is one of the leading strategic projects, and it is hoped that work on it will be completed in mid-2025. The project has also been able to employ 13,000 Iraqi workers, technicians, and engineers.
Al-Sudani said: The catalyst crushing project will contribute to reducing damage to the environment and reducing the release of harmful gases, and works within environmental limits, with a capacity of (55) thousand barrels per day, and at a cost of (3.77) billion dollars, and it is in the final stages of completion.
Al-Sudani was briefed on the executive work progress in constructing the fourth refining unit in the refinery, which will have a design capacity capable of refining 70,000 barrels/day of crude oil and converting it into derivatives. He also supervised the actual operation of the steam boiler unit, with a production capacity of 300 tons/hour, to supply Production expansions in refinery units and facilities with the steam needed for operation. Al-Sudani returned to Baghdad yesterday afternoon, after a visit to Maysan and Basra governorates.
