Minister of Resources to {Al Sabah}: Giant projects will provide large quantities of water

As part of the intensive efforts made to overcome the problem of water scarcity in Iraq, the Ministry of Water Resources has prepared an ambitious plan to implement major projects aimed at providing large quantities of water to the country, stressing its intention to implement a promising irrigation project using pipes in cooperation with neighboring countries.
According to experts, the decline in the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates in recent years is due to the policies of the upstream countries that built many major dam and reclamation projects, without coordination with Iraq, which is a downstream country, which affected its historical entitlements in the two rivers, whose revenues in Iraq have declined to less than 30 percent of their natural rates.
Minister Aoun Diab Abdullah said in a statement to Al-Sabah: His ministry has prepared an ambitious plan to implement major projects aimed at providing large quantities of water, including closed irrigation projects using pipes, which he confirmed require large allocations, similar to the (Wasit - Tigris) development project, which extends on both sides of the Tigris River starting from (Suwayra - Kut) and with an area of 560 thousand dunums. He added that other projects include adopting concrete lining, in addition to cultivating most of the land using modern systems instead of the old methods that waste water, in addition to cultivating large areas using laser leveling and modern technologies.
Abdullah stated that in this context, some similar projects have been completed, similar to the southern Faw project, while work is still underway on the Al-Bahar district project, centered in the village of Al-Dura in Basra Governorate, with an area of ten thousand dunums.
In the same context, he revealed that his ministry is proceeding with implementing a promising irrigation project using pipes in cooperation with neighboring countries, namely Turkey and Iran, by exploiting their technical and artistic capabilities, and it requires large financial allocations borne by Iraq, in addition to seeking to complete the project of the irrigation network using pipes on the Euphrates River in the holy Karbala Governorate with an area of ten thousand dunums, and the same area in other areas to be determined later.
Regarding the ministry's future directions to confront water scarcity in the country, the Minister of Resources stated that one of his ministry's priorities is to line the large rivers with concrete quilts in their entirety, with the aim of preventing water loss through seepage, while continuing to remove reeds and papyrus in them mechanically, as they consume large quantities of water and prevent water from flowing smoothly into the tails of streams and water discharges.
He added that work is underway in this context by starting to line the banks of Al-Dughara in Diwaniyah Governorate, and Al-Dujaila in Wasit Governorate, in addition to the rivers: Al-Mashrah in Amara, Mahrot in Diyala, and Bani Hassan Stream in Karbala, while continuing to implement the aforementioned project in other governorates when allocations are available.
