    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced today, Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the resolution of the Kirkuk Provincial Council crisis and the formation of its local government, after it was delayed for seven months since the provincial council elections that took place last December.
Al-Sudani said in a statement received by Baghdad Today, "After the federal government succeeded in organizing local elections for the governorates, including Kirkuk Governorate, where these elections have not been held since 2005, political dialogues were held under our auspices, and for more than one round, between the forces that won the governorate council seats, and others through a committee formed for this purpose."
He added, "The dialogues resulted in an agreement to form a Kirkuk administration coalition to include the winning forces. They also resulted in a paper for the political agreement that included the basic principles, a political axis and an administrative axis, in addition to the cultural and economic axis."
He pointed out that "in the context of implementing what was agreed upon in the last dialogue session, we call on the members who won membership in the Kirkuk Provincial Council to hold the first session of the Council, headed by the oldest member, next Thursday, corresponding to July 11, 2024, at exactly one o'clock in the afternoon in the Provincial Council building."
Al-Sudani called on "the concerned political forces to cooperate in completing the implementation of what was agreed upon in the political dialogues, and to complete these dialogues in the coming days."
Al-Sudani had sponsored several meetings of the political forces representing the components of Kirkuk Governorate, and included in the Kirkuk Administration Coalition, the last of which was on May 29, during which “the foundations of the political paper were approved, with some of the comments received being studied and reviewed, as well as an agreement to hold a session of the provincial council within an agreed time frame; in order to begin the constitutional procedures for forming the local government, and approving the contents of the political agreement paper,” according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
