Baghdad's "waste" and the western "sun" for electricity production

In the context of seeking to provide alternative sources for the production of electricity as well as to get rid of the huge amount of waste pumped into the capital, the Baghdad Municipality announced the referral of the project to generate electricity from waste to two specialized Italian and Turkish companies, at a time when Anbar Governorate revealed 17 investment opportunities to install stations to generate electricity using solar panels during the next phase.
The spokesman for the Baghdad Municipality, Engineer Mohammed Al-Rubaie, told Al-Sabah: “The project to generate electricity from waste was presented as an investment opportunity because it is very large and there is no local company that owns a plant specialized in burning waste, which amounts to 9,000 tons per day.” He added that “the municipality decided to give 3,000 tons of this waste - nearly a third of the amount of waste produced by the capital Baghdad - as an investment opportunity for these plants that will be located in the Abu Gharb and Nahrawan areas, which generate electricity and sell it to the Ministry of Electricity by connecting it to the national grid at prices acceptable to both parties.” He explained that "these environmentally friendly plants will operate using the fourth and fifth generation technology to burn waste without toxic emissions," stressing that "the prices of these plants are very expensive, which prompted the Secretariat to invest in this aspect." Rubaie continued that "24 companies submitted bids to the Investment Authority to enter this field, but two international companies, Italian and Turkish, with extensive experience in this field, are the ones who won the investment contract, and they have similar work in advanced countries." He pointed out that "the project will be referred to them to work on producing electricity by burning waste over the next three years in the capital, Baghdad, and if the experiment is successful, it will be generalized to the rest of the companies and the remaining amount of waste that is disposed of daily in the capital." Meanwhile, according to the plans and strategy of the federal government in searching for alternative and clean energy sources to establish power generation stations, local governments and investment authorities in the governorates have moved to offer investment opportunities to generate electricity from solar energy and benefit from the country's sunny weather in most seasons of the year. Anbar Provincial Council Advisor for Energy Affairs, Mohammed Khaled Al-Mohammadi, told Al-Sabah: “The energy policy for 2024 will witness the presence of 17 investment opportunities to generate electricity through solar panels,” noting that “there are approvals from the Investment Commission, the governorate, the Department of Municipalities and State Real Estate to be offered for investment.” He added that “these opportunities will include districts from Fallujah to Rutba,” explaining that “these panels will be distributed scientifically so that the districts can fully benefit from them.” He continued: “The governorate will seek to operate the combined cycle in Heet district, which will contribute to increasing the electricity produced in the governorate,” noting that “the governorate is about to meet with the Emirati company (Masdar), which has been assigned to install 650 megawatts of solar panels to generate electricity, as it will begin work during the next phase.”
Regarding the oil file in the province, Al-Muhammadi confirmed that "the Ministry of Oil is in the process of adding two refining units with a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day for each unit to the Hit refinery, bringing its production capacity to 36,000 barrels per day, in addition to adding a unit to improve gasoline in the Haditha refinery, which is one of the branches of the Baiji refinery."
He pointed out that "the governorate was provided with a 400,000-liter spherical tank in the (Tash) warehouse to store the strategic gas reserve for use in the event of any emergency, curfew or crisis in Anbar." The provincial council's advisor for energy affairs hinted at a meeting soon with the Ministry of Oil to find out the latest developments
