Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Ahmed Al-Asadi announced today, Tuesday, a mechanism to begin correcting the legal status of foreign workers, noting that most foreign workers entered as tourists.
Al-Asadi said, in an interview with the official agency, followed by Mawazine News: "There are hundreds of thousands of unorganized foreign workers who enter from various parties, including through a visa granted under the title of visit and emergency visa, as well as a visa granted by investors, and a visa granted by the Ministry of Oil to oil companies, and there is also a visa granted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under the title of tourists," indicating that "their numbers exceed hundreds of thousands, as they are granted a visa without obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Labor, and thus they enter under one title and move to another, exceeding the residency and turning into workers."
Al-Asadi added, "The ministry has launched more than one phase to correct the status of foreign workers, and we are waiting for the registration of illegal workers, the last of which was last week, as we submitted a report that will be presented to the Council of Ministers for a vote in order to allow them, especially Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Syrian workers who entered legally and do not have a work permit, and who exceeded their legal period and entered under the title of a visit or under the title of necessity and stayed here to work," noting that "we will proceed to start correcting their legal status."
He continued, "The ministry is cooperating with the labor committee and all specialists and with the Ministry of Interior and the National Intelligence Service to solve the problem of workers in general and correct the status of hundreds of thousands of them."
