Political science professor Khaled Al-Ardawi commented on Wednesday (August 7, 2024) on the possibility of Iraq playing a role in reducing the escalation between Iran on the one hand and America and Israel on the other.
Al-Ardawi said, “Baghdad can be a good mediator to resolve many of the crises in the Middle East,” adding, “But that requires it to gain the trust of all parties, including Washington and Tel Aviv, and it cannot gain this trust and play the role of a neutral and positive mediator unless it is far from bias and entrenchment for this party at the expense of the other party.”
He added, "Baghdad's entrenchment weakens its negotiating role and makes it a questionable mediator. It cannot play this role when it cannot control its political and security decision on its territory."
He pointed out that “the division of the political and security decision in Iraq, the presence of armed groups above the law and not subject to the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and standing with one of the regional and international parties against other parties, makes Baghdad weak diplomatically, and an opponent to some at any political dialogue table, and the result is its inability to play the role of regional and international mediator and maker of peace and stability in the Middle East.”
The Middle East is in a state of cautious anticipation in anticipation of an Iranian strike against Israel in response to the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyeh, with a missile that targeted his residence in the heart of the Iranian capital, Tehran, amid warnings of the repercussions of this potential conflict on Iraq when the battle enters the stage of regional war and the participation of the axis of resistance, including the Iraqi one, in it.
Iran accuses Israel of carrying out the strike, while senior officials, led by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, have threatened Israel with "severe punishment," while Tel Aviv stresses that it will respond to any Iranian targeting, while its ally Washington confirms its support in the face of any threat.
Observers believe that Iran has extended arms in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. On this basis, although the conflict is far from Iraq at least so far, when taking into consideration the Iranian power centers that are deeply embedded in Iraq, this explains that any Iranian strike against Israel will be met with an Israeli attack on Iraq targeting the aforementioned Iranian centers.
On October 10, 2023, an informed government source revealed that US President Joe Biden had asked Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to play a mediation role with Iran, in order to contain any expansion of the scope of the battles taking place between Israel and Hamas when the latter stormed the Zionist settlements in an operation called “Al-Aqsa Flood.”
The source said, "Biden appreciated Baghdad's official role in calming down the current crisis, and spoke about playing a mediating role in order to calm down.
He added that "Al-Sudani expressed his belief in the necessity of working to contain and not escalate, provided that this is accompanied by a ceasefire and the creation of humanitarian corridors to provide relief to the people of Gaza.
