sources revealed that Sunni political forces are backing down from the agreement on the parliament presidency, while indicating that an influential political party is entering the crisis.

Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted the sources as saying, “After the consultative meeting held last week, the political forces agreed to amend the internal regulations to reopen the door to nominations for the position, and to give up ministerial shares in exchange for obtaining it,” indicating that “this agreement encouraged the Coordination Framework to call for a session to elect the president, which did not happen after Sunni forces backed out of their agreement.”

She added that "an influential political party pressured Sunni parties to back out of the agreement, and they were supposed to hold a second meeting at the home of the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, to mature the agreement and determine its mechanisms," noting that "the influential political party, according to the sources, succeeded in convincing the Sunni parties to revoke the agreement."

In a statement issued last Wednesday, the Sovereignty, Resolve, and Contract parties warned against "imposing a unilateral vision on the mechanism for choosing a new speaker of parliament after nearly 9 months of the position being vacant following the termination of the membership of its former speaker, Mohammed al-Halbousi, from parliament."

State of Law Coalition spokesman Aqil al-Fatlawi said in a televised statement that "the Sunni forces that were present in the agreement turned against it after they left the meeting."

Al-Fatlawi stressed that Al-Maliki's coalition "does not want to hold a session to elect the Speaker of Parliament, while there is a sharp division within the Sunni component."
