    Hussein Faleh:
The Ministry of Agriculture revealed plans to cover the local need for vegetable products for an entire year and not for one season, while announcing the export of 72 thousand tons of vegetables and more than 4 thousand tons of fruits.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad Al-Khazai, said in an interview: We have an agricultural season for each crop that ends with the end of the season, and there is no crop that covers an entire year, as in potatoes, indicating that in the coming years, our local production of tomatoes, onions and cucumbers will cover the needs of the local market throughout the entire year. He added that during peak times, very large quantities are exported to the markets of the Arab Gulf states, which have become fixed markets for Iraqi agricultural crops for many reasons, including the proximity of the distance as well as the advantages that Iraqi agricultural crops enjoy that make them desirable to those countries.
He pointed out that the agricultural crops exported during the year 2023, whether tomatoes, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, watermelons or watermelons, exceeded 72 thousand tons exported to various markets, while fruits such as oranges, pomegranates and apples were exported at about 4 thousand tons to these markets of various fruits, in addition to dates that are exported to various markets in Asia. Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture revealed a plan to add one million acres for the next agricultural season, while it announced the allocation of 830 billion dinars to purchase sprinklers. The ministry’s spokesman, Muhammad Al-Khazaali, said in a press statement: “The size of the cultivable areas in Iraq is estimated at more than 27 million acres in various governorates of Iraq,” indicating that “the area previously exceeded 50 million, but the conditions of water scarcity and climate change led to a reduction in the area.”
He explained that “the winter plan for wheat cultivation was around 50 percent, and 12.5 million dunums were cultivated as part of the agricultural plan,” noting that “the ministry always takes into consideration expanding land use.”
He added that “last season, the ministry was able to cultivate 4 million dunums of desert land using pivot sprinklers and groundwater.”
He added that “the ministry allocated more than 830 billion dinars to purchase approximately 12,000 sprinklers using modern irrigation technology,” indicating that “it will be able to add an area of one million dunums to agriculture to be used next season.”[/size]
