The General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage at the Ministry of Culture warned of the impact of climate change on Iraqi antiquities, while stressing the importance of protecting cultural heritage.
The head of the ministry’s climate change team, Montaser Sabah Al-Hasnawi, said in a statement: “The importance of protecting Iraq’s cultural heritage from the impact of risks associated with climate change by developing adaptation strategies to preserve cultural practices and archaeological and heritage sites in the country.”
Al-Hasnawi added, “The field tour was conducted with a team from the Karbala Antiquities Inspectorate, in coordination with specialized professors from the University of Kufa and a number of researchers concerned with archaeological affairs.”
For his part, the head of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage, Ali Obaid Shalgam, praised the “team’s efforts,” indicating “the importance of preserving Iraq’s cultural and civilizational heritage,” noting that “these tireless efforts come to prepare an infrastructure capable of withstanding the repercussions of the climate change phenomenon, relying on scientific studies and research.”
It is worth noting that the ancient Al-Qusayr Church is located southwest of Karbala Governorate, within the western plateau, 5 km from Al-Akhdar Fortress. Its construction dates back to the fifth century AD. It is distinguished by the presence of Aramaic inscriptions that have become extinct, in addition to the collapse of parts of its walls due to climate factors, which have become a real problem threatening its extinction.
