FAO and WFP: Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change

The world celebrates October 16 of each year as World Food Day, a day declared by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. This day is celebrated on a large scale by many organizations concerned with food security, including the World Food Program .
This day came with the aim of raising public awareness of the suffering of the hungry and undernourished in the world, and to encourage people around the world to take measures to combat hunger. More than 150 countries celebrate this occasion every year.
This day is passing and Iraq suffers from the consequences of the absence of visions and development plans that would protect our food security, and the failed policies of the influential power forces that did not give this sensitive file any importance.
20 percent
On this occasion, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program said, on Monday, that Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change, which calls for confronting the consequences of the crisis.
The two UN organizations stated in a report that Iraq is one of the countries in the world most affected by the consequences of climate change, which means that the country's agriculture may be subject to extreme weather in summer and winter.
The report quoted the representative of the World Food Program in Iraq, Ali Reza Qureshi, as saying that “Iraq is still one of the countries most affected in the world by the harmful effects of climate change, and unless implementation is implemented.
Mitigation and adaptation, the future may not be promising for smallholder farmers and vulnerable groups in this country.”
He added, “We at the World Food Program believe that food is the path to peace, and therefore serious action must be taken immediately by the Government of Iraq and the international community, to adopt climate-smart food systems and build long-term resilience in order to ensure that Iraq and its people are able to adapt. In these difficult times.”
At the same time, the report called on the Iraqi government and the competent authorities to adopt smart farming and irrigation systems that are compatible with the risks posed to the agricultural sector in the country due to climate change.
Imminent danger
A member of the Iraq Center for Strategic Studies, Jalil al-Lami, said, "Since 2003, Iraq was subjected to a demographic and social change, due to the water war from the upstream countries, whether Turkey or Iran, and this matter was reflected and affected the agricultural lands," explaining that "thousands of dunums suitable for agriculture were removed." from service, and thus caused the loss of thousands of job opportunities for workers in these lands.”
In his speech to "The People's Way", he indicated that "the economic crisis that we were exposed to greatly affected food security, and due to the absence of strategic and development plans and visions in the field of agriculture in particular, we noticed that Iraq resorted to granting import licenses for agricultural crops, food products and animals, through Licenses that are not subject to customary duties or definitions, in a way that does not protect the national product, the farmer, or the livestock breeder.
He pointed out that Iraq "did not put strategic plans for me, at least in the medium term, and for example, the white paper is an economic plan. The medium-term economic plan was supposed to come to fruition within a year and a half to two years, and so far we have not seen anything of the fruits of this plan." And Iraq does not have any strategic plans to maintain and protect its food security.”
And Jalil added, “Food security is a major part of the economy, whether in Iraq or any country in the world, and the economy in reality is complementary to politics and vice versa. Great effect.”
In the context of his speech, the expert warned that “this decline in the economy portends a major economic catastrophe, if the situation continues as it is or crude oil prices drop globally, so those concerned must separate the political file from the economic file.”
Regarding what is required, he stressed that “other non-governmental economic sectors must be supported, and farmers and livestock breeders must be supported to ensure the continuation of their production, and these things are done through strategic development plans and a development program similar to the oil industry development program in Iraq.”
