The Ministry of Education, in coordination with the Supreme National Authority for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, has intensified awareness campaigns on the dangers of the drug scourge.
The National Advisor for Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, Adnan Yassin, said: “There has been coordination with the Ministry of Education since the beginning of the current academic year, to conduct workshops and courses for educational supervisors, human rights, school principals and teachers, in addition to the guidance staff for students, regarding the dangers of the scourge of drugs and their spread, and their negative impact on the future of the student and society in general.”
He added, “The plans set by the Authority and the decisions taken by it were implemented on the ground, especially with regard to conducting drug tests for applicants for weapons and driving licenses, and students accepted into postgraduate studies (masters and doctorate), in addition to including other categories in conducting the test, which certainly serves the interests of the citizen and reduces the risk of the spread of drugs.”
He explained that “the plans that were previously put in place by the authority to reduce the risk of the spread of drugs were reflected in the reality that we see in hospitals with the large number of visitors whenever the security forces tighten the noose on dealers and users who resort to visiting and quitting use permanently, and benefiting from the legal paragraph that stipulates that if the user surrenders himself to the health institution for the purpose of treatment, criminal cases against him will be dropped.”
The Committee for Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances in the House of Representatives is working on submitting proposals to amend the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. (50) of 2017 and following up on the implementation of recommendations related to combating drugs by the executive authorities, which were previously submitted by the committee and voted on by the House of Representatives, in addition to following up on all government plans and programs and community activities, expressing its opinion on them and contributing to raising awareness against the phenomenon of the spread of drug use and trafficking.
In recent years, drug trafficking and abuse have increased in Iraq, especially in the south and center of the country, which has become a major route for smuggling and trafficking, despite the security forces recently strengthening their operations to pursue drug dealers and announcing almost daily the seizure of quantities of drugs and the arrest of many smugglers.
The most common drug in Iraq is methamphetamine, or crystal, which generally comes from Afghanistan or Iran. There is also Captagon, an amphetamine that is produced on an industrial scale in Syria before crossing the border into Iraq and flooding the markets of wealthy Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia, which is the main consumer market in the Middle East.
The Iraqi security forces currently announce almost daily raids and arrests related to drugs, but this is still not enough to reduce the phenomenon.
