Launching the National Environment Strategy: A Step Towards Sustainable Development and Protection of Natural Resources

Iraq launched, on Wednesday, the National Environment Strategy for the years 2024-2030, as part of plans to preserve the country's natural environment.
Environment Minister Nizar Amedi said in a speech during the conference launching the National Strategy for Environmental Protection and Improvement in Iraq 2024-2030, “Studies have indicated a deterioration in the global environment.”
He said, “Environmental scientists and researchers have agreed that our planet is facing real problems resulting from increasing global pollution rates, climate change, and the deterioration of natural systems,” noting that “human activities are what affect the environment through their desire for development and urban expansion at the expense of the natural system and natural balance.”
The Minister of Environment called on “all countries of the world to stand together through international agreements and treaties to preserve the Earth’s environment and restore balance, and through drawing up environmental policies and strategies.”
He added, "Iraq and part of the world are facing major environmental challenges resulting from previous wars and the political and economic cycle that the country has gone through, which has made environmental work, for a long time, far from the priorities of successive governments that focused on defending the homeland."
He added: “Today, as a result of the clear stability, the current government has allocated the environment portfolio and made it one of the most important priorities to support development in Iraq, where the focus was on setting the necessary policies to reduce pollution and confront climate change, in addition to increasing and renewing protection measures and supporting environmental improvement efforts, and working extensively to make environmental work through setting gradual economic plans and adopting the decision to move from the planning stage in environmental and climate work to the implementation stage.”
Amedi noted that “one of the most important measures is launching the pollution reduction strategy, which is one of the most important priorities, in addition to launching the mines strategy, completing the documents and policies related to climate change, supporting the Iraqi negotiating delegation, activating work in international chemical agreements, and establishing the General Company for Carbon Economics,” noting that “work is underway to draw up policies related to desertification and biodiversity, which has become natural.”
For his part, environmental expert Mohammed Khalaf spoke about the importance of Iraq launching a national environmental strategy document, saying that it “represents a decisive step in confronting the environmental challenges facing the country. Iraq suffers from multiple environmental problems, including land degradation, desertification, air and water pollution, and a decline in biodiversity.” He pointed out that “developing a national environmental strategy would contribute to strengthening sustainable policies and procedures to protect the environment.”
He added, “The document provides a regulatory framework for improving environmental management by directing policies towards promoting clean energy, improving air quality, and protecting water resources. The document also contributes to achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.”
Khalaf continues, “Iraq needs regional and international cooperation to successfully implement this strategy, given the impact of climate change and the worsening environmental problems that require joint efforts on a broader level.”
