Professor Faris Issa, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in Baghdad, participated today, Sunday, September 22, 2024, in the first international conference on climate change and its impact on health security in Iraq (Kurdistan Region - governorates not organized within the region), which was held today in Baghdad.
Issa delivered a speech during the conference, beginning by conveying the greetings of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, to the participants in the conference, wishing them success in confronting and addressing the problems resulting from climate change.
The head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s representative office pointed out in his speech that “health and climate are closely linked together, and that humans and all living things are exposed to various problems as a result of air and water pollution, decreasing food security, and the increased risk of the spread of infectious diseases due to rising temperatures.”
In another aspect of his speech, Fares Issa noted that “World Health Organization statistics indicate that about 250,000 people may die from 2030 to 2050 due to climate change, malnutrition, infectious diseases, and heat stress. These risks place us before an important humanitarian and national responsibility, to combine efforts and work together seriously to develop scientific plans and programs that are commensurate with the size of the serious challenges resulting from climate change.”
At the end of his speech, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s representation presented several proposals to confront and address this natural crisis, which were summarized in the necessity of activating and implementing the Iraqi National Contributions to Climate Change document, and calling on international bodies to support Iraq with environmentally friendly technology, in addition to benefiting from the experiences of advanced countries to shift towards smart agriculture, paying attention to environmental investment, achieving sustainable development goals, and combating poverty.
It is noteworthy that the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Rashid, the Federal Minister of Environment, Mr. Nizar Mohammed Saeed, the Minister of Health of the Kurdistan Region, Dr. Saman Barzinji, Mr. Qasim Al-Araji, the National Security Advisor, and a number of other officials and specialists in the field of climate change attended the conference, which will continue for two days.
