The Ministry’s Media Director, Murad Al-Saadi, said that prison overcrowding is one of the most prominent challenges facing the Ministry, and it has worked to exert and harness all necessary capabilities to solve it by preparing plans according to which the rate of overcrowding inside correctional prisons will be reduced from (300) percent to (200) percent.

He explained that the first of these plans includes opening the Najaf Deportation Prison soon after its completion rates have reached advanced stages, as inmates convicted in criminal and drug cases will be transferred, in addition to inmates who live in the central governorates such as Karbala and other governorates close to Najaf, thus facilitating visits by inmates' families.

He explained that the Najaf Prison was built according to important international specifications and standards, indicating that putting it into service soon will contribute to relieving a large part of the overcrowding in other prisons, in addition to opening the Amara Central Prison, which is also one of the plans implemented to relieve congestion inside prisons and which has also reached advanced stages of completion.

Al-Saadi confirmed that all projects allocated for this aspect are being directly followed up by the Minister of Justice in order to work on completing them within the specified period, according to the official Al-Sabah newspaper.

He added that among the plans that the ministry worked on was the rehabilitation and expansion of some correctional prisons to be prepared to receive inmates coming from other correctional prisons, including Jamjamal Prison, Al-Baladiyat Prison for Women, and Al-Nasiriyah Prison, which witnessed the reopening of the light sections after their complete rehabilitation, in addition to Baghdad Central Prison, which witnessed rehabilitation work for some correctional sections.
