Iraq launches a new step towards diversifying its electrical energy sources at lower costs, from converting stations to combined cycles to renewable energy, then electrical connection, and the latest of which is the signing of the contract to connect the electricity market of the Gulf Cooperation Council with Iraq, which was officially completed yesterday.

However, the important thing is not only the diversification of energy sources, but also the amount of cost that will be reduced from Iraq’s shoulders, as all indicators indicate that the cost of electricity imported by Iraq is less than the cost of producing it internally, and this may be due to the obsolescence of the power stations and the costs of gas and others.

The project will enhance Iraq's energy security by using approximately 4 million megawatt hours annually from the GCC grid, at competitive prices that are lower than the cost of local production, leading to a reduction in public expenditure.

For his part, the CEO of the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority, Ahmed Al-Ibrahim, said that signing the contract for the Gulf electricity market interconnection project with Iraq provides a competitive and interactive platform for electricity trade between the two parties, noting that the interconnection project with Iraq will provide the possibility of annual trade of between 300 and 400 million dollars annually with an amount of energy exceeding 4 million megawatt hours annually and will be a major breakthrough for the GCC countries in the field of creating a competitive electricity market and also supplying electricity competitively to the Republic of Iraq.

It is not known how much exactly a megawatt will be sold for, as the cost of a megawatt produced in Iraq ranges between 75 and 100 dollars per megawatt, while estimates indicate that importing ready-made megawatts from abroad may reach only 50 dollars per megawatt, which makes importing electricity more feasible than producing it in Iraq.
