Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani stressed, during his participation in the dialogue workshop of the Bahr Al-Ulum Forum and the Al-Alamein Institute on the marshes, that Iraq is one of the countries most exposed to environmental transformations and climate change.
Al-Sudani's media office stated in a statement that "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani attended the dialogue workshop held by the Bahr al-Ulum Forum and the Alamein Institute for Graduate Studies, regarding the marshes, water challenges, and influential climate changes."
This workshop, the third on the marshes, was devoted to the subject of the Al-Hawizeh Marsh and the best way to manage it jointly with the Iranian side, which was represented in the workshop by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muhammad Hassan Sheikh Al-Islami, according to the statement.
The Prime Minister pointed out that “the government worked to re-evaluate the environmental status of the marshes, and develop programs to mitigate the effects of climate change, and internal and external action to support this file, and work to ensure the continued supply of water to the marshes, after the drought waves that affected many of them, including supporting the local population, and providing the necessities of life for them and their livestock, in addition to the tireless work to preserve the biodiversity that this unique environment embraces.”
He pointed out that "Iraq is one of the countries most exposed to environmental transformations and climate change," indicating that "the absurd wars of the dictatorial regime led to the destruction of natural elements and caused serious problems."
He explained that “the government has signed many memoranda of understanding and agreements with various countries in the area related to the environment or water,” noting that “the government has worked hard to ensure Iraq’s full share of water, by organizing the joint management of the Tigris and Euphrates basins, in accordance with the systems and laws related to the management of shared river basins.”
Al-Sudani went on to say, “Al-Hawizeh Marsh is the most important and famous marsh, extending over an area of up to 3,000 km, and its storage capacity reaches 6 billion cubic meters,” adding, “Al-Hawizeh Marsh was registered under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, in order to preserve it and continue to feed it with water.”
He added: “The importance of the marshes varies to include the historical aspect that led UNESCO to include them on the World Heritage List, and made them a tourist destination.”
He said, "The risks we face in the environmental aspect push us to enhance joint action to reduce the effects of severe climate change."
He concluded by saying: “The current situation requires doubling efforts and developing work mechanisms to preserve our environment and climate in a healthy and safe manner from all factors of destruction.
