    Iraq reopens Trebil port

    Tuesday, 07 May 2013 15:06

    Shafaq
News / Jordanian government said on Tuesday that Iraqi authorities have
responded to its request to open Trebil border crossing between the two
sides for the passage of Jordanian trucks loaded with oil.

    Iraqi
authorities closed Trebil port a week ago and said that this procedure
will last for 48 hours for “internal affairs reasons of Iraq” and
informed Amman on its decision two days before the closing.

    However,
the period ended and Iraq didn’t re-open the crossing as a result of
the tensions escalation in the country after Hawija incident and the
    subsequent clashes and attacks.

Dozens of trucks were stuck in the Jordanian crossing since that time.

    “Diplomatic
efforts resulted in allowing Jordanian trucks stuck on the
Jordanian-Iraqi border to leave through Trebil crossing,” The spokesman
for the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Sabah Rifai said in a statement
    briefed by “Shafaq News”.

    “Jordanian ambassador in Baghdad,
Mohammed al-Qaran informed us that contacts with the Iraqi authorities
have allowed Jordanian trucks in Iraqi-Jordanian border to cross,” he
    added.

The Jordanian embassy in Iraq confirmed that Baghdad has
taken a decision yesterday which allowed opening Trebil border crossing
in front of the 140Jordanian trucks.

    According to the Iraqi
ambassador in Amman, Jawad Abbas it will allow Jordanian oil trucks to
cross the border to enter through Trebil border crossing starting from
    Tuesday morning.

Abbas confirmed in a statement to the official
Jordanian news agency that he received a letter from the Ministry of
Interior in his country to allow oil tankers containing hazardous and
flammable materials to enter to Jordan, hoping that other trucks will be
    allowed to cross soon.

Trebil port about 370 km from Amman and about 570 km from Baghdad is the only crossing between the two countries.

    Trebil
port is located in Anbar province in western Iraq, inhabited by the
majority Sunni where anti-government protests take place since months
ago as security sectarian tensions worsened in these areas recently.
