BAGHDAD,— Iraq’s foreign minister warned his Turkish counterpart on Sunday that Baghdad is against the deployment of Turkish troops in the northern Iraqi town of Bashiqa, and stressed that any kind of military maneuvers on the border between the two nations without consultation with Baghdad would be rejected.
“Once again, Baghdad is against the presence of Turkish troops near Bashiqa”, said Iraqi foreign minister Ibrahim Jaafari.
Jaafari met with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, on the sidelines of the meeting of the Non-Aligned Summit in Venezuela, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, Jaafari stressed the need for the withdrawal of Turkish troops inside Iraq, which have been deployed in Bashiqa to train local forces for the liberation of Mosul.
“His Excellency asserted Iraq’s rejection for any military operation on our joint borders without the consent of the Iraqi federal government in Baghdad,” the foreign ministry said.
The statement said the Iraqi government continued to reject the presence of Turkish troops in Bashiqa and called for their withdrawal from Iraqi territory and to put an end to the crisis.
Both sides also stressed strengthening relations between Ankara and Baghdad.
There are reportedly 800 Turkish troops deployed in the Mosul and Shaqlawa regions, the move that sparked a crisis between Ankara and Baghdad. Turkey sent a contingent of an additional 150 forces and 25 tanks in December 2015 to bolster its military presence in the Bashiqa camp, an area that has seen recent fighting.

Iraqi leaders said in early December that hundreds of Turkish troops had arrived without their knowledge or approval, calling it a violation of its sovereignty.
No withdrawal of the Turkish troops has been seen so far. Rather they are still present in Nineveh province, based at Camp Bashiq, 70 kilometres west of Iraqi Kurdistan capital of Erbil.
