A huge explosion heard from a ship off the coast of the semi-autonomous Puntland region of Somalia late on Monday and the flame was seen rising from what appeared to be a military vessel, a senior official said.
"We heard a huge explosion and the flames rose from the ship, I think the ship is foreign," Ali Shire told Reuters, the mayor of the Alula district, a pirate haven.
He said he believed the ship was probably military because two foreign ships had helped save the crew.
It was not immediately clear whether the blast was caused by an accident on board or by hackers. It was also unclear whether the ship sank after the explosion.
Somali pirates often patrol the water around Alula surreptitiously. In March, the pirates hijacked the oil tanker Aris 13 with a crew of 8 Sri Lankans. It was the first time a commercial ship had been hijacked in the region since 2012.
