Merkel stresses Turkey should not become a member of the European Union

    09:03 - 04/09/2017

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed that Turkey should never become a member of the European Union.

"She will talk with her colleagues (in the European Union) to reach a common position on this issue in order to put an end to her accession negotiations (Turkey to the EU)," Merkel said during a televised debate with her rival in the upcoming elections on the post of Chancellery Socialist Democratic candidate Martin Schultz. ).

There has yet to be a formal Turkish response to Merkel's new position, which warned of the consequences of that action on relations between Berlin and Ankara and the impact of the deterioration of potential relations on the fate of 12 Germans imprisoned in Germany.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last month described leaders of Germany's ruling party as "enemies of Turkey" and said they deserved to be rejected by German-Turkish voters in the forthcoming German elections.

About one million ethnic Turks living in Germany can vote.

The German Chancellor's latest comments came after a pledge by her rival Schultz to end Turkey's dream of joining the European Union if he is elected as new adviser to the country in the September 24 elections. Ending / 25
