JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli authorities arrested 15 Jewish extremists following a secret investigation into a group accused of pursuing and threatening Arab men who marry Jewish women, Israeli police said.

The public radio said that among those arrested was the leader of the extreme right-wing Lehava movement, Benzi Gopstein. Police did not confirm or deny Gopstein's arrest.

"Fifteen known police suspects were detained and detained as activists of the Lahava organization for interrogation at night," police said in a statement.

The police suspect they "worked to search and threaten young Arabs who are in contact with Jewish women and girls."

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the suspects were currently being questioned and it was not yet clear whether they would be charged.

The Laohava organization is a radical right wing active against "mixed Jews and mixed marriages" and derives its ideas from the anti-Arab "Kach" anti-Arab movement founded by Meir Kahane in 1971.

Kach was banned in 1994 after one of its supporters, Baruch Goldstein, killed 29 Palestinian Muslim worshipers at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

In 2014, Lahava organized a rally in which anti-Arab slogans such as "Death to the Arabs" were staged during a mixed marriage in Tel Aviv between a young Muslim and a Jewish girl.

Last April, six Israelis, including two soldiers, were arrested and charged with carrying out attacks against Palestinians amounting to "acts of terrorism and racism".

Police said at the time they were influenced by a video published by the "Lahava".

Gopstein was previously questioned in 2015 after his defense of church burning, arguing that Jewish law recommends the destruction of idols in the Land of Israel.
