[ltr]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration has tentatively decided to defer consideration of requests by most of the refugees from 11 countries that are considered "very dangerous" and will continue to deal with refugee requests from other countries, government officials said.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to a memorandum sent by the Trump administration to Congress before the government announced its new procedures for verifying refugee applications, and seen by Reuters news agency, the US government would stop a program to reunite the families of some of the refugees settled in the United States.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to the memorandum, the reunification of refugee families will resume immediately upon the application of refugee examination adjustments.[/ltr]
[ltr]The amendments come at the end of a ban on the consideration of most refugee applications for 120 days in accordance with Trump's order to review refugee screening procedures.[/ltr]
[ltr]The 120-day deadline expired on Tuesday, and Trump issued an executive order allowing the resumption of the general refugee program in the United States.[/ltr]
[ltr]"We still have concerns about the entry of citizens of 11 countries," the memo said. She said the government would review the matter over 90 days "to determine the additional precautions necessary to ensure that the entry of refugees from these countries does not represent a threat to US security."[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump, who took office in January, focused on sharply curbing refugee incomes, as part of his tough anti-immigration policies that were the focus of his election program.[/ltr]
[ltr]US appeals court backs ban on "travel ban" on citizens of six Muslim countries[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump decision: Who will affect the travel ban to the United States?[/ltr]
[ltr]The Trump Administration announces new visa requirements[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump immediately after his presidency imposed a ban on the entry of refugees and travelers from a number of Muslim-majority countries, but the judiciary resisted the decision.[/ltr]
[ltr]Opponents of the ban say the resolution is aimed at banning Muslims from entering the United States.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US administration denies it intends to discriminate against Muslims, saying travel bans and security measures are aimed at protecting the United States from terrorist acts.[/ltr]
[ltr]Refugees from countries that require a higher level of security screening will be temporarily given priority over the 11 countries as "dealing with their requests may not require extensive use of resources," the note said.[/ltr]
[ltr]As of the end of 2016, a higher level of security screening is required for most male citizens from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, as well as Palestinians living in these countries.[/ltr]
