(Reuters) - Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi warned of the consequences of moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.
US President Donald Trump postponed a statement Monday on the transfer of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Trump is expected to deliver a speech on Wednesday, in which observers expect recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macaron, in a telephone conversation with Trump expressed concern about the unilateral American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, stressing that the status of the city likes to settle within the framework of peace negotiations.
The deadline for Trump to decide whether to extend the decision to freeze the transfer of the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem will expire on Monday.
However, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said at his weekly conference on Tuesday that the Council of Ministers refuses to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem and warns of the consequences of the subject
Although the Congress resolution is binding, it includes an item that allows presidents to postpone the transfer of the embassy for six months to protect "national security interests." Successive US presidents have signed an order to postpone the embassy's relocation twice a year, considering that conditions have not yet matured. That's what Trump did last June.
The other option is to give Trump the green light to move the embassy, as promised during his campaign. US media said the US president would deliver a speech on Wednesday on the whole issue.
There has been conflicting information on this issue in recent weeks. But observers expect Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel without going as far as relocating the US diplomatic mission to the city, which Palestinians claim sovereignty over its eastern part of the Jewish state since 1967 and want to be the capital of their future state.
