    Iraq demands Cuba pay its debts


    Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, Cuba, has called for cooperation in dealing with the debt issue in Havana, and has sent an official invitation to his foreign minister to visit Baghdad.
    Jaafari's office said in a statement that "the foreign minister received a copy of the credentials of the new Cuban ambassador non-resident in Baghdad, Alexis Bandrich Vega," noting that "the two sides discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to upgrade them to achieve the aspirations of the two friendly peoples."
    The statement stressed that "the government is moving to promote investment opportunities in Iraq, and that Cuban companies can benefit from them, and contribute to reconstruction, and the need to expand scientific and cultural cooperation between Baghdad and Havana, and the signing of memorandums of understanding in various fields."
    He called on the Cuban side to "cooperate with Iraq in dealing with the debt issue, especially as Iraq is going through exceptional circumstances due to low oil prices and the cost of war against terrorist gangs."
    For his part, the Cuban Ambassador Alexis Bandrich Vega, his country's readiness to help Iraq and strengthen relations between the two countries.
