North Korea announced on Friday evening that it would provide a half-hour time to coincide with the timing of its southern neighbor as a gesture of good faith as part of efforts to bring about inter-Korean peace.
The announcement came according to a statement issued by the Central News Agency of North Korea, quoted by the Associated Press.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un promised on April 27, during his talks with his South Korean counterpart Mon Jie, to include his country's time zone to its southern counterpart.
The promise was made by a decree issued by the head of the country's Supreme People's Assembly, the North Korean agency said in a statement.
The two Koreas used the same time zone for decades before the North in 2015 set its own timing by 30 minutes delaying the timing of South Korea and Japan.
Pyongyang then said it did so to root out the legacy of Tokyo's colonial rule between 1910 and 1945 on the Korean Peninsula, when Japan changed Korea's timing to coincide with its timing.
Last week, North Korean media reported that Pyongyang planned to adjust its timing to coincide with the timing of the southern neighbor in a "first step to the process of reconciliation" between the two countries.
"The pursuit of uniformity is the first step in the process of national reconciliation and unity," Kim Jong-un, the North's leader, was quoted as saying.
"It was painful to see two hours pointing to two different timing for Pyongyang and Seoul on the wall of the summit venue," he said.
The leaders of the two Koreas last Friday held a round of talks during the "historic summit" they held for the first time in South Korea and lasted about 100 minutes.
After the summit, the two leaders agreed to hold high-level military talks in May to reduce hostility between the two countries and start reuniting families separated by the Korean War. Finished
