(Reuters) - Israel is pressing US President Donald Trump's administration to recognize its sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights and expects US approval in months, an Israeli cabinet minister said on Wednesday.
Intelligence Minister Israel Katz described the recognition in an interview with Reuters of Israel's 51-year-old control of the Golan Heights as the "top agenda" in diplomatic talks with the United States.
Any such move would be seen as a follow-up to the United States withdrawal from the international nuclear deal with Iran, Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the opening of a new US embassy in the city this month.
Israel praised the measures, while causing serious concern among Washington's top European allies.
The White House has yet to comment on Cats' comments.
The Golan Heights are a strategic plateau between Israel and Syria with an area of about 1,200 square kilometers.
Israel seized it from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war, and Israel moved settlers to the area it occupied and then annexed in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.
Katz, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's small security cabinet, called the Golan proposal a possible part of Trump's approach to managing what is seen as a "regional expansion and aggression by Iran," Israel's arch-foe.
"This is the perfect time to take such a step," he said. "The most painful response that can be directed to the Iranians is to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights - an American declaration, a presidential declaration, stipulated by law."
The Israeli minister said that the issue, raised by Netanyahu at his first meeting at the White House with Trump in February 2017, is currently under discussion at multiple levels within the administration and Congress in the United States.

Asked whether such a decision could be made this year , he said , "Yes, in a few months may increase or decrease slightly" .anthy
