(Reuters) - Israel is stepping up its air strikes on Syria in an attempt to derail Iran's Iranian passage through Iraq to Syria and Lebanon, security analysts said.
The US Wall Street Journal quoted a US security official as saying the target of the attack, hundreds of kilometers from Israel's borders, was a message that it would not tolerate any Iranian attempts to establish a land bridge between Iran and Lebanon, through Iraq and Syria.
Over the past months, it seems that Tehran has established a land bridge, which runs from the Iranian border and passes through central Iraq into Syria.
For Iran, this ground road represents an important strategic advantage: Iran had previously had to transfer its weapons first to Hezbollah militias in Lebanon and its other militias, and then reach the Syrian military bases by aircraft.
Earlier reports said Israel was behind an unprecedented air strike in June on a town on the Syrian-Iraqi border.
"The attack targeted a villa in the city of Al-Hara, southeast of the town of Bu Kamal, or members of Iraqi Shiite militias, as well as members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards," the Wall Street Journal report quoted a US security source as saying.
According to the report, Israel's goal was to prevent the transfer of weapons to Syria.
According to the report, the air strikes killed more than 20 fighters from the Hezbollah Brigades, an Iraqi Shiite militia armed with no links to Hezbollah and believed to be carrying weapons from Iran to Syria through Iraq.
The newspaper quoted Sheikh Abutaleb Saidi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Hezbollah Brigades, said that the fighters were in Iraqi territory when they were targeted in the bombing of June, and that the forces that were bombed were not under its leadership at the time.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Hezbollah militia groups are officially affiliated with the Iraqi government, but are in fact loyal to the state of Iran.
CNN reported that the bombing was similar to the Israeli air strikes in western Syria near Damascus and Homs, often targeting the infrastructure and the Iranian military presence in Syria, while the bombing of June occurred in eastern Syria, and targeted loyalist forces To Assad and not to Iran.
Israel has concerns that Iranian control over Syrian territory will allow it to move equipment and military forces by land from Iran to the Israeli border.
Most of the attempts to smuggle weapons systems are airborne, but the air attacks on the arms shipment in eastern Syria show that Iranians are also often trying to exploit the land route that has been opened to them since the Americans took over the area from the Islamic State Organization (Da'ash) .
