Turkey is seeking to exploit the imposition of new sanctions by the United States on Iran, becoming its market source of Iraqi imports of goods, as an alternative to Iran's banned counterpart .
Analysts say these attempts come amidst the hidden trade conflict between Ankara and Tehran to expand their influence in Iraq, which is struggling to get out of its many hubs in order to revive the economy .
Tehran was exposed to two economic sanctions, the first on August 6, and the second on the fifth of this month, and extended the sectors of consumption, oil, finance, banking and maritime .
But Baghdad received extraordinary exemptions from Washington for a month and a half, the latest of which was yesterday. Two government officials told Reuters their country had agreed with Tehran to swap Iraqi food products with Iranian gas and energy supplies .
Baghdad is seeking US approval to allow it to import Iranian gas used in power plants, and they need more time to find an alternative source, the members of the Iraqi Energy Committee said .
The Turkish-Iraqi Business Council of the Foreign Trade Relations Commission (DIC) said that Iraqi markets generally prefer basic products from Iran to low prices, such as meat of all kinds, eggs, legumes and plastic tools, as well as building materials, but will not get them today .
Amin Saadoun Taha, chairman of the Joint Council, said that Iraq would import all its needs from Turkey, and that this was an important opportunity for Ankara, where the Iraqi traders would fill the void caused by the absence of Iranian products by sanctions .
He pointed out that they have identified Iraqi importers to many Turkish companies, pointing out that the trade relations between Turkey and Iraq, is below the required level, at the moment .
He also stressed the need to improve trade relations between the two countries and increase exports to Iraq, and that the efforts of the two governments to cooperate in this regard, bear great importance .
There are only two gates between Iraq and Turkey, which have a negative impact on trade relations, leading to increased product wages, so a new gate must be opened and the Opakwe crossing open .
According to the researcher in the commercial section of the Stop of Political, Economic and Social Research (SITA), Sharif Dilek, that the trade exchange between Iraq and Iran is not limited to energy only .
He pointed out that Iranian companies are one of the strongest competitors of Turkish counterparts active in the export of basic products to the Iraqi market .
"Iran's growing political influence in the region, following the US invasion of Iraq, has played a major role in boosting economic relations between the two countries, " Anatolia's Anatolia news agency reported .
But as Iran is facing economic sanctions in the recent period, you will find it difficult to be in Iraqi markets as comfortably and easily as before .
The Turkish expert believes that Turkey must transfer its trade relations with the governments of Baghdad and Erbil, to higher levels during this stage .
He pointed out that the areas administered by the central Iraqi government, and the cities of Sulaymaniyah and Erbil, the Kurdistan Regional Government, is one of the most important commercial markets in the country .
He explained that Turkey can seek to export a lot of products to Iraq in various fields, such as food, agriculture, building materials, textiles, automotive, machinery and electrical industries .
The data from the Turkish Ministry of Trade shows that Iraq has risen to second place after Germany in terms of import of Turkish products in 2011, and the value of Turkish exports to Iraq rose to reach 12 billion dollars in 2013 .
While the value of Turkish exports to Iraq in 2003 amounted to about 870 million dollars, the volume of foreign trade rose last year to $ 10.6 billion .
Last year, the Iraqi market accounted for about 5.8 percent of Turkey's total exports, ranking fourth in the import of Turkish products .
Turkish exports to Iraq totaled about $ 9 billion last year, while the value of products imported by Turkey from Iraq exceeded $ 1.6 billion .
Turkish construction companies have an important position in the Iraqi contracting market, entering it for the first time in 1981, and its activities in the country increased significantly after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 .
Turkish companies contributed 645 infrastructure projects between 2003 and 2012, worth $ 12.9 billion .
