WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump has repeatedly asked the national security team to draw up a plan to strike fast-moving Iranian ships in the Gulf during his first year in office, a US news website reported on Tuesday.
The US news website Axis quoted two sources as saying they had heard Trump's request directly and three other senior former officials.
According to the sources, Trump told officials in his administration at the time, "Those Iranian boats are entering quickly, approaching our fleet, they may be carrying explosives and we do not know." Can you believe that, while we are not moving?
Trump asked then-Defense Secretary James Matisse "why do not we drown them," referring to Iranian boats in the Persian Gulf.
Sources told Axius that such an "unequal" response at a time when Iranian ships were harassing the US Navy less than in previous years could have "quickly led to war."
The website, citing three well-informed former officials, said Matisse, who was proud of opposing Trump's instincts, "never made plans to strike fast Iranian boats."
He added that former national security adviser Herbert Raymond McMaster had taken it upon himself to try to calm the president.
"Mr. President, this has happened in the past, but the Defense Department tells us that recently there has been no harassment, so they are not worried about it," the site said, during a meeting at the White House, which rebuked McMaster.
"Well, what if we repeat it, what will we do?" McMaster replied. "We asked the Defense Department to consider options."
It is noteworthy that in December 2018, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards launched large-scale military maneuvers in the waters of the Arabian Gulf, near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The maneuvers coincided with the arrival of US aircraft carrier John Stennis Gulf waters.
On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the White House had asked the Pentagon to develop military options to strike Iran.
The National Security Council, led by John Bolton, asked the Pentagon last year to provide the White House with military options to strike Iran, the newspaper said, quoting current and former US officials.
The request "raised concerns in the Ministries of Defense and State."
The request came after the launch of allies with Iran shells near the US embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, and the US consulate in the city of Basra last September.
